![]() Apparently in their world it takes a digger to do 'minor' gardening work. Some of the contracts can be funny in appearance. I thought that was a nice touch to the help side of things. When you move the camera around the vehicle you're using, the buttons and the connecting lines all move so you can still see the button bindings and the parts of it. The controls are fine, I particularly liked the help function, instead of having a static message displaying the controls, or having to pop to the in-game controls, a funky set of key bindings that are connected to relevant parts of a vehicle by way of a thin white line, with icons that hint at what they do when you press em. Graphics cards these days have such a massive capability to show some of the best graphics you could probably ever see until the next generation of graphics cards - and german games in general seem to not utilize the power that AMD, Nvidia and similar are capable of putting out. It lacks something that really yells out that they've even tried to make the game as realistic as possible - and it's not the only game that has done it, far from it, every other single german game I've touched on as had this seriously half-arsed approach to the graphical shine of a program. My only complaint is that as with most other German games - such as the Kobra Alarm series, and the myriad of other simulations that there are in existence, with the exception of Rescue 2014, the graphics are ludicrously lacklustre. I don't think I've seen a construction simulator of this calibre before - which is no bad thing. Now that's just my opinion about it as a game of a specific genre. Not because I'm a xenophobe, far from it, but because as soon as jolly old deutschlander gets bored with his oktoberfest, he has to wax practical and constructive and crack out yet another flipping simulation. Once you complete your main objective, you can either continue exploring, or exfiltrate using Igor's portal device.Įxploration in Chernobylite's early hours is tense and exhilarating. Occasionally, you'll bump into a mutant or a NAR patrol, which you can either sneak around or engage in combat. In either case, missions play out in a similar fashion: you skulk through the Zone's knotty vegetation and dilapidated buildings, using your environment analyser to avoid radiation pools and highlight collectible resources. Guards are pretty easy to avoid in the early game, but patrols become denser as things progress. This could be purely to collect resources intended for expanding your base or feeding your companions, or it could be a more bespoke mission that moves the story forward, either bringing you closer to solving the mystery of your wife's disappearance, or helping out one of the various companions who gradually populate your base as the game progresses. This warehouse forms your base of operations, where you construct machines to craft new equipment, and slowly gather resources in preparation of a second, larger scale "Heist" on the Power plant.Įach new in-game "Day", sees you venture out into one of five regions in the zone on a mission of your choice. As your stalkerish characters skulk through the meticulously recreated corridors and reactor halls of the power-plant, you trigger flashbacks to that fateful night which recall scenes from the 2019 HBO series, technicians arguing in confusion and denial in the control room, and turning valves by-hand in the flooded vaults beneath the open reactor.Īfter the raid, in which Igor retrieves a chunk of Chernobylite to power a handheld portal device of his own devising, Igor and his Olivier regroup at a warehouse on the fringes of the Zone. This opening mission presents an interesting amalgam of Chernobyl fact and fiction. Aided by your solider-of-fortune pal Olivier, you learn how to sneak past NAR patrols while the vast bulk of the NPP looms above you like a sleeping leviathan. Its purpose is not entirely clear, but it's related to the appearance of a new, mineral-like substance in the Zone, a substance known as Chernobylite.Īfter a brief, dreamlike introduction that sees Igor arrive in the Zone by train, Chernobylite kicks off proper with a slick, Call of Duty-like night-raid on the power plant itself. The area surrounding Chernobyl has been occupied by a private military company known as NAR. Quite why Igor waited three decades to check whether his wife was dead or not isn't entirely clear, but his timing in returning to the Zone is less than ideal. Fast-forward 30 years, and Igor returns to the Exclusion Zone to search for Tatyana after he begins to see visions of her in and around the power plant. Also present was Igor's wife, Tatyana, who vanished on the night of the catastrophe. You play as Igor Khymynyuk, a physicist who was employed at the Chernobyl NPP at the time of the disaster on the 26th of April 1986. It's an unusual structure, and it's simultaneously Chernobylite's most interesting feature and the source of all its flaws. Its semi-open world is split into several locations that you revisit frequently, environments and enemies evolve over time, and the whole experience is threaded together with an extensive base-building metagame. Where Stalker uses a now-familiar open-word shooter template, Chernobylite has more in common with Metal Gear Solid 5. While aesthetically the two games are interchangeable, sharing core stylistic motifs like mutants, anomalies, oppressive weather, and a certain nuclear power plant that had a bit of a mishap in April 1986, structurally they've mutated in quite different ways. Slight repetition can't diminish the incredible atmosphere of Farm 51's post-apocalyptic survival game.Ĭhernobylite may look like it's a cheeki breeki away from being a full-on S.T.A.L.K.E.R tribute act, but The Farm 51's shooter isn't quite a retread of irradiated ground. ![]() Use Disk Utility to get the /dev/rdisk path for the floppy drive. In this example, rdiskXX# represents the path to the floppy disk, and it then scrapes the drive and dumps the readable content to a disk image. sudo dd bs=512 if=/dev/rdiskXX# of=/path/to/foo.dmg conv=noerror, sync Of those few floppies which had some bad sectors, I was still able to recover some of the contents by using the command line utility dd. Of the 200 disks I archived, only about 1 in 10 had any major issues (compared to the Zip disks I also tried to back up, and nearly every one of them was dead or in the process of dying). One sad reminder about this relic of a technology - it's slow! Fortunately, even though some of these disks were well over 25 years old, they were of a higher quality than the floppies made in the late 90s (which tended to be a whole lot less unreliable). I was able to create a disk image off of a floppy, as well. It was able to see any functioning disk I used (both 1.44MB and 720K). When I went over to a PC (running Windows 7), it was able to see both the 1.44MB and another 720K disk which did work.Īt home I tried another experiment and hooked the drive up to an older iMac running Snow Leopard. But Disk Utility did see the 1.44MB disk appear. The Mac didn't initially seem to have any luck with the 720K disk (I later discovered that particular disk was probably dead, since Windows couldn't read it either). The Micro Center staff was accommodating to let me try it out and see if my 1.44MB and 720K disks worked on Mac and/or PC. The back of the drive identifies as a Model: FD-05PUB. Disk Utility identifies this as the Y-E DATA USB-FDU (USB floppy disk drive). This drive is similar to the package I picked up at Micro Center for around $15 USD (just without the IBM logo). One of the drives was in a nondescript, tan cardboard box that was easy to open up. I visited a Micro Center and they had two types of external USB floppy drives available. User comments were varied in how reliable these drives would be with the disks. Buying a drive off the internet and hoping that it would work with 720K disks was a bit of a gamble. I found a number of products like this which claimed to work with 1.44MB disks, but most products were not very clear if they did or did not work with the older 720K format. Since I haven't owned a computer with a floppy drive in it for many years, I went in search of an external floppy drive that would be able to read both 720K and 1.44MB disks. Most of my floppy disks were 720K or 1.44MB disks for the PC, with a handful of 800K Mac formatted disks. ![]() The last time I had done an archive was back in the late 90s, so it was a good idea to go through this process while there was still the necessary hardware available to back up these old relics of digital storage.
